Application of Transparent Conductive Films in the Fabrication of Amorphous Silicon Solar Cells
Overview
Hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a‑Si:H) thin‑film solar cells are thin‑film photovoltaic devices. The absorber layer of the cell exhibits very poor lateral conductivity. Transparent conductive oxide (TCO) serves as the core electrode material, performing multiple functions including light transmission, light trapping, photogenerated carrier collection and current extraction. It directly determines the short‑circuit current, fill factor and conversion efficiency of the cell.
Common materials: ITO (Indium Tin Oxide), AZO (Aluminum‑doped Zinc Oxide), BZO (Boron‑doped Zinc Oxide), FTO (Fluorine‑doped Tin Oxide).
Preparation processes: magnetron sputtering, CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition).
Position in the p‑i‑n cell structure
Glass substrate → Front‑side TCO (window electrode) → p‑type amorphous silicon layer → i‑type intrinsic amorphous silicon absorber layer → n‑type amorphous silicon layer → Rear‑side TCO (back‑reflective conductive layer) → Metal back electrode
1.Front‑side TCO (light‑incident window electrode)
Light passes through TCO into the amorphous‑silicon absorber layer, which requires high light transmittance and low sheet resistance. A textured surface is fabricated for light trapping to elongate the light propagation path and boost the photogenerated current.
2.Rear‑side TCO (back contact layer)
Located between n‑type silicon and the aluminum metal electrode, it forms ohmic contact to reduce contact resistance. Meanwhile, acting as a reflective layer, it reflects unabsorbed light back into the absorber layer for re‑utilization and increases the short‑circuit current.

Main Functions
Transparent Window Electrode: High visible‑light transmittance reduces optical loss and enables sunlight to enter the light‑absorbing layer.
Collects carriers to output electric current and compensates for the poor lateral conductivity of amorphous silicon.
Textured surface achieves light‑trapping effect and extends the light‑absorption path.
Ohmic contact buffer lowers the electrode interface contact resistance and improves the fill factor.
Blocks metal‑atom diffusion, protects the active silicon layer and prevents leakage‑induced failure.

Mainstream TCO Materials
ITO (Indium Tin Oxide): Good light transmission and conductivity; scarce indium resources; moderate thermal stability; widely used in laboratories and small‑area devices.
AZO (Aluminum‑doped Zinc Oxide): Low cost, resistant to hydrogen plasma, mature sputtering process, mainstream for mass production, applied as front electrode and back reflection layer.
BZO (Boron‑doped Zinc Oxide): Excellent textured light‑trapping performance, suitable for front electrodes of high‑efficiency modules.
FTO (Fluorine‑doped Tin Oxide): Good thermal stability and strong chemical inertness, suitable for large‑area rigid‑substrate modules.

Key Technical Requirements
1.High average transmittance in the 400‑800 nm visible‑light range
2.Low sheet resistance to reduce series‑resistance loss
3.Compatible with subsequent plasma processes and resistant to hydrogen‑plasma erosion
4.Capable of forming favorable texture for light trapping
5.Good adhesion and moisture resistance to guarantee long‑term module service life
